How Long Does an Excavation Project Take?
Realistic timelines for excavation jobs in Cambridge — from a half-day trench to a week of site prep — and the local conditions that stretch them.
The dig itself is usually the fast part. What stretches a Cambridge excavation timeline is what happens before it — locates, permits, sometimes the GRCA — and what's under the surface once we start.
Typical durations once we're on site
- Utility or drainage trench: often a single day, including backfill
- Regrading a residential lot: one to two days
- Footing for an addition or garage: one to two days
- Full basement or foundation dig: two to five days
- Site prep for a new build: a week or more, depending on lot size and cut-and-fill
- Underpinning a Galt century home: weeks, in engineered sections, coordinated with the concrete crew
What adds time in Cambridge
- Water. Spring digs near the Grand and Speed can need dewatering — a pump running while we work.
- Rock. Shallow dolostone in parts of Galt means breaking, not digging.
- Access. Narrow infill lots mean smaller machines and more trips.
- Weather. Heavy rain stops a dig; a wet spring can push a schedule by days.
- Paperwork. Locates take up to five business days; a GRCA permit can take weeks.
How to keep it moving
Book early enough that locates and permits are done before the machine arrives. Have the drawings final — a change to the footing plan on dig day costs a day. And if the site is near the rivers, aim for late summer or fall when the water table is lowest.

Can you dig in winter in Cambridge?
Yes, but frozen ground slows the dig and can need breaking at the surface. For foundations, the concrete side also needs cold-weather measures. Where there's flexibility we recommend fall.
