Ground in Cambridge changes block by block. Along the Grand and Speed it's river outwash — sand and gravel with a water table that rises every spring. On the flats of Hespeler and East Galt it's glacial till full of boulders. And in parts of old Galt the dolostone bedrock the stone buildings were quarried from sits close enough to the surface that a basement dig can hit it. We plan the machine, the shoring, the dewatering and the disposal around what your lot is actually made of.
What's different about excavating in Cambridge
The Conservation Authority is part of the permit. Large parts of downtown Galt, Preston along the Speed and low areas of Hespeler are inside the GRCA's regulated area. Excavation, fill and grade changes there need a GRCA permit on top of the City of Cambridge building permit. We check the mapping at the first site visit — it changes the timeline more than the cost.
Old services, approximate paint. Galt and Preston have thousands of homes on original clay sewer laterals and services nobody recorded. We treat Ontario One Call markings as approximate in the old neighbourhoods and hand-dig or hydrovac inside the tolerance zone, every time.
Rock gets priced up front. If we suspect shallow bedrock — and in older Galt we often do — the quote carries a rock allowance rather than a surprise halfway down.
Tight lots are the norm. Infill on a narrow Galt lot, an addition on a Preston bungalow, a garage behind a Hespeler home: we size the machine for the side yard, not the other way around.

Can you get a machine into a narrow Galt lot?
Usually. We run compact and mid-size excavators for infill lots, and bring material out through the front with a smaller machine where the side yard is too tight.
When is the best time of year to dig near the Grand or Speed?
Late summer and fall — the water table is lowest and there's no frost. Spring digs near the rivers are the ones most likely to need dewatering.
