Site excavation for new builds, additions and garages across Cambridge — Galt, Preston, Hespeler and the rural roads out to Branchton and Roseville.
Ground in Cambridge changes block by block. Along the Grand and the Speed you're digging in river outwash — sand and gravel with a water table that rises in spring. Up on the flats in Hespeler and east Galt it's heavier glacial till. And in parts of Galt the dolostone bedrock that the old stone buildings were quarried from sits close enough to the surface that a basement dig can hit it. We plan the dig — machine size, shoring, dewatering, disposal — around what your lot is actually made of, not a generic assumption.
A good chunk of our Cambridge site work is infill: a new build on a narrow Galt lot, an addition on a Preston bungalow, a detached garage or workshop behind a Hespeler home. Tight access is the norm, and we size the equipment for it.

Working in the floodplain
Large parts of downtown Galt, Preston along the Speed and low areas of Hespeler are inside the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated area. Excavation, fill placement and grade changes there need a GRCA permit on top of the City of Cambridge building permit. We've worked through that process many times; we'll tell you at the site visit if your lot is affected and what it adds to the timeline.
Bedrock and boulders
If we suspect shallow rock — and in older Galt we often do — we'll say so before quoting, and price the dig with a rock allowance rather than surprising you halfway down. Where it's glacial till, expect boulders; the machine handles them, but they slow the day.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GRCA permit to excavate in Cambridge?
Only if the property is in a regulated area — floodplain, near a watercourse or wetland, or on a steep slope. Much of downtown Galt and the river corridors are. We check the mapping before we quote.
Can you get a machine into a narrow Galt lot?
Usually. We run compact and mid-size excavators for infill lots, and where the side yard is too tight we bring material out through the front with a smaller machine and a conveyor or skid steer.
Where does the excavated soil go?
Clean fill is either stockpiled on site for backfill or hauled to a licensed receiving site. Ontario's excess soil rules apply to larger volumes, and we handle the paperwork.
